What we’re loving this month…

With Spring right around the corner, we are loving everything floral! But not just any floral pattern… we are loving modern floral patterns. Let’s dig in…

Traditional Floral Patterns

Traditionally, floral patterns in fabrics and wallpapers tended to be very realistic, depicting floral bouquets and a loose colour palette. The scale of the pattern usually ranges from small to medium sized prints, emphasizing a more realistic quality.

Modern Floral Patterns

Modern floral patterns are quite different. They are graphic, playful and more focused on specific colour palettes. They tend to have more background or negative space to balance out the more graphic florals and their overall size of pattern tends to be larger in scale for more impact. Let’s take a closer look.

Graphic Qualities

One of the most obvious differences is that modern floral patterns have a more graphic quality and they are less realistic in nature. The effect is a more flat, two-dimensional floral-scape. Depth comes into play with colour instead of shadow.

Playful Qualities

Some of that graphic quality is actually left unfinished! This particular pattern shows off some of the flowers as line drawings and others are more true to life with colour. This playful attitude towards a floral print is a modern interpretation, celebrating the process of design making. Also notice there is more white-space or blank space in this pattern - such a key element to a modern floral pattern.

Blank Space Qualities

The flowers are arranged in a way that creates a specific grid and it’s balanced with the background or blank space. This is another quality that comes through in so many modern floral patterns where negative space is just as important as the floral pattern itself. It makes for a fresh, unfussy look and that makes it feel more modern.

Colour Palette Qualities

Today’s floral patterns are created with specific colour palettes in mind. Colour palettes that can easily integrate into today’s interior design palettes. Floral patterns are designed with distinct colour combinations that can be mixed into other aspects of our home designs.

Scale Qualities

And finally another key aspect of modern floral patterns is the scale of the print or pattern overall. Modern florals tend to be bold in colour but also in size. They are all about making an impact and a statement.
